Spring break in DC

It is finally Spring. And does time pass by so quickly these days. It is already the second week of April. Temperatures are rising though there have been sunny days but terribly cold due to the wind. And believe it or not, we had snow on the first day of Spring. What a way to celebrate Spring eh!  Today is Sunday and boys will be back in school tomorrow after about one and a half week of Spring break. We went to DC last Friday evening for the weekend and was home by Sunday evening. Could not get away longer as the other half could not get any doctors to replace him at the clinic, thus leaving for DC at 8pm that Friday. Well, alhamdulillah, it was better than nothing. Boys had a chance to see most of what DC is known for. In short, we spent the whole of Saturday at the National Mall. For those who are not familiar with DC, the National Mall is not a shopping mall. It is basically a stretch of area where you have all the monuments and museums on your left and right, and at one end is the Lincoln Memorial while the other end is the Capitol Building. So here is where you find the Smithsonian castle, the Air and Space museum, the Natural History Museum, the Art Gallery, the Sculpture Garden, The Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Museum of American History, the Washington Monument aka the Big Pencil, among others, and I mean many others. Trust me, one day is not enough to cover everything. Especially when there is a long line for the museums. One end to another is about 2 miles/ 3.2km walk and did we walk, haha. Thank God the boys were good with all the walking we did. They used to complain when we had to walk a lot but this time, they were really good about it.

The gorgeous Smithsonian Castle
We did not manage to cover everything, just the Smithsonian castle, the national art gallery, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, the Korean War memorial and a few gardens that we walked through, and the Air and Space Museum after the second try (we walked away after the first try due to too many people with the longest lines ever). We only sat outside the Natural History Museum as there were also lines. But Thaqif had gone there mid last month as he was in DC as one of his school's representatives to the Model United Nations Conference in Washington DC area. So he was not complaining about not being able to get in. And Ruiz was like, "oh we can always come back". Hmmm...

We meet again Mr President
Anyhow it was a very very windy day that Saturday. Wind aside, it was actually a beautiful sunny day. There was a pillow fight taking place at the park between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. Not too sure what the pillow fight was for but it got bigger each time with more and more people joining in. I believe most of them were students and as we walked back to the Smithsonian area, we met young adults carrying pillows heading for the park. Some others were there, flying kites so it was a pretty good and colorful sight. There were many food trucks and that caught my attention and my tummy's attention. Long lines there too and most of the food trucks had 'Halal" written on them, so it was way easier for us. We had lamb on rice and lamb gyros picnic style, sitting in the park, on the grass under a shady tree, scrambling to cover our food each time the wind blew like crazy.

The Washington Monument
All in all, it was a good getaway for us despite it being just a short weekend. The other half drove around the Embassy Row the next afternoon before we left DC and the areas around Dupont Circle. The houses and surroundings there reminded me of the suburbs of London. It was like stepping into suburbs like St. Albans (which I had dreamt of staying at once upon a time, many many years ago) and it was simply beautiful. I said aloud that maybe when Thaqif  goes to George Washington University if he is actually and truly interested in political science (since he is into all this UN stuff), we could probably move there and have a house there in that particular area, in one of those gorgeous looking London suburb look-alike houses, and get a chance to keep an eye on Thaqif's progress. And he quickly quipped  , "I thought you said you want to camp outside West Point because Ruiz will be there and you need to keep an eye ON him." I rolled my eyes. Yes, ok, thank you for reminding me that.

Just another day

it's a sign. it's a heart, it is love. taken at the airshow
at Jones Beach two weekends ago.
Did I tell you that Thoriq is now in flying school? One step closer to being a pilot, God willing. And it has been almost a year since I moved over here with the two boys. It feels pretty surreal at times that a whole school year is almost over for them. and come June 16, it will be a year since we have moved here. I  am still jobless and pretty much friendless, haha. Well I know people, there are a few who drop by to say hello and even stay for a bit of a chat and clearing up whatever dessert I have left on the table. But they are not friends like the ones I have back home. They are people I say hello to when I meet them on the street or the person who happens to be the wife of the handyman who fixes stuff at the house or the handyman himself. Or friends of the husband's. It sounds pretty pathetic I know, but Adam said it is because I choose to be alone and refuse to socialize. Which I disagree of course. I do not just go out there and socialize. I do when I need to and when I do not, I would rather stay home doing what I enjoy doing - read, bake, pottering around. It does get lonely at teeny tiny times but honestly I am not complaining. My life revolves around the boys and Adam, and I know that that is not good but I am pretty much contented at this point of time. I do not know if it is age. I do not find the need to go out a lot or have friends around me. I much prefer friends back home which does not leave me much of an option of course. Perhaps it is because I do not work and thus, do not get to make friends. My neighbor is pretty aloof. We say hello or nod if we see each other outside. She does not seems to be too interested to have a conversation with me and I have much given up on trying. Why bother trying to make a conversation when the other party obviously is not interested. At times, I do not even know if I am really sorry for myself  or pretending to be, and telling Adam that I must be so pathetic for not having friends at all. I enjoy my time alone at home when the boys are in school and Adam is at work and once the boys are home, I am always busy with making dinner and cleaning and then get too tired for anything else. Plus I would much rather just spend time with Adam once the boys are in bed despite the fact that he would be absorbed in getting his kingdom saved while preparing to attack others (ok it is a game) and I would be watching a TV series on my iPad while folding clothes, or doing some reading or checking my Facebook or WhatsApp-ing or Viber-ing friends or family or Thoriq. Anyway yes that is pretty much how it is for me these days. Cleaning up, laundry and off for my run and/or brisk walk in the morning. Pick up the boys in the afternoon and then cooking and cleaning and checking on boys, folding clothes. And at times I still manage to get another round of brisk walk, reading and baking in between everything else. And I am ok, not complaining and I secretly wish that I do not have to work any longer (although this is no secret anymore now that I have blabbed all here) since home and the boys including the big boy are lots of work enough.

Anyway back to Thoriq, yes, the eldest boy is in a flying academy in Langkawi Island (in the northern part of Malaysia, a beautiful island too I must add). He will be there for the next 18 to 24 months, the duration which very much depends on the weather as they need to have a certain amount of flying hours completed and at times weather can be a factor and bad weather means no flying and no flying means extension. I am really hoping he would study hard for this as he has been so passionate about flying with all his time spent on flight simulator in the past two or three years. Not to mention the fact also that his father and I are putting a huge amount of money to get him through this school.  Flying school is no joke when it comes to the cost. I also hope being away from home and living in a dorm (more like a room with just him and a room mate) will teach him to be independent and he will finally learn to be an adult and be responsible with the choices he makes..

As for Thaqif and Ruiz, they have been pretty much getting through school rather smoothly. Both have been maintaining at least a 3.6 GPA and Ruiz has twice earned a place on the honours roll with Thaqif missing it by a few miserable points which is still a good feat taking into account that they have just moved here from a totally different country with a totally different education system and culture. But Thaqif surprised me when he actually made the cut to be on the track team and has been to a number of meet at other schools with today's being the final one. The track and field team will be having a pizza party in school tomorrow to call the season a day and I believe it has been a good experience for him. We joke that he runs fast because he is skinny. Ruiz shoots up in height. Although both he and Thaqif are getting taller by the day, Ruiz at the age of 12 is tall for his age, slimming down too, although he has not lost all his chubbiness as yet and has again beaten Thaqif in height, maybe by a half inch or so. Graduation for Thaqif is in three weeks and he will be off to High School comes September. Again how time flies. Adam said "ah what is a year?" when I told him this morning that I can't believe that it has already been almost a year since we moved here.

Ramadan is again beckoning us. In less than a month, we head into the holiest month and two weeks after that we will be heading home to KL. I know Adam prefers me to call this home but I now call both KL and NY home. So we, minus Adam unfortunately, will be in KL for the rest of Ramadan and to celebrate Eid, and we will leave for home in NY towards the end of August. Mak is all excited about me making the trip back and told me that I should head straight for their house from the airport. Bak sounded happy enough when I told him but Bak has always been the cool one and so I am not sure if he is even anywhere near excited like Mak. But I am so looking forward to going back and meeting the family and friends. Unfortunately Adam will not be able to make it due to work and I will only have a short time to spend with Thoriq. Regardless I am thankful to Allah for everything and for this chance at going home to see Bak and Mak and everyone else who matters a lot to me.

soon, it will be farewell to Spring

Spring is almost over. Summer is already making itself felt. It is hot, hot, hot today. Ramadan is around the corner. Home in KL is beckoning me. I have much to look forward to insyaa Allah. I shall not waste my time pondering over how it would feel when it comes to leaving KL for NY. I will take each day as it comes, savour each and every one of them, the moments and time to be spent with all my loved ones. There no doubt will be tears when I leave, but there will be so much joy, the tears will be worth it all.

Gotta run now. Beef stew has been in the oven for the past hour and a half with another hour and a half to go. I have rice to cook and Thaqif to pick up from school. Adam will be home very late as he has a business meeting after his clinic ends at 730pm. And I still have clothes to fold and some reading to sneak in. It's past 6pm and another day is almost over for us here while another day is just beginning over there in Malaysia for all the people whom I love. May Allah ease their way, keep them in His protection and bless them with lots and lots of happiness. And most of all, for always, I wish them... a whole lot of love.

All that you are

Dedicated to my three boys :)

found on pinterest

P/S  When I told my Thaqif in the middle about this, quoted some of its words and came to the "flip to my flop" part, he cheekily asked me, "but what if I am your flop, not your flip?"  I could only roll my eyes.  I seems to be doing a lot of that these days.

Adieu Pak Cu

Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun. Surely we belong to Allah and to Him shall we return.
Adieu Pak Cu. May Allah bless your soul, place you among the righteous and bless you with Jannah. I will forever remember your infectious laugh, your tease, your jokes and definitely your kind heart.

When I die
when my coffin
is being taken out
you must never think
i am missing this world.

don't shed any tears
don't lament or
feel sorry
i'm not falling
into a monster's abyss.

when you see
my corpse is being carried
don't cry for my leaving
i'm not leaving
i'm arriving at eternal love.

when you leave me
in the grave
don't say goodbye
remember a grave is
only a curtain
for the paradise behind.

you'll only see me
descending into a grave
now watch me rise
how can there be an end
when the sun sets or
the moon goes down.

it looks like the end
it seems like a sunset
but in reality it is a dawn
when the grave locks you up
that is when your soul is freed.

have you ever seen
a seed fallen to earth
not rise with a new life
why should you doubt the rise
of a seed named human.

have you ever seen
a bucket lowered into a well
coming back empty
why lament for a soul
when it can come back
like Joseph from the well.

when for the last time
you close your mouth
your words and soul
will belong to the world of
no place, no time.

Of uninvited guests and season's change

It has been a long time since my last entry.  Ramadan came and went. I celebrated Eid away from the family, with just the two boys eating homemade instant nasi impit and Adam away at work. Totally different from what life has been. I am not complaining. Whining? May sound like it but really I am not. I chose this path, I knew what lie ahead. To be fair to myself, of course I do not know the exact situation and emotions that would engulf me but I knew enough that sadness would sometimes come for a visit, and that loneliness can sometimes be an uninvited guest. I had a choice and I picked this. Pros and cons, good and bad. I made my bed and I must now lie on it and choose to have good dreams and fight off the nightmares. But yes there is much happiness too in our household, smiles and laughters amid the tears that at times still find its way back to me.

Anyhow for quite a while then, I just couldn't find time nor passion to write down my thoughts. I think about it all the time but I never could quite find my way back to this blog until today that is. Boys are busy at school. Yes they are in school. My nervousness over them adjusting to school here is basically over. They actually enjoy school which challenges their creativity and mind, and believe it or not, they are reading like there is no tomorrow.  I have never seen them reading as much as they are now. Thaqif even read my entire collection of Mitch Albom's books and both he and Ruiz even read one of my favourite books, The Kite Runner. How awesome is that? It used to be pretty difficult getting them to read back when we were in KL. Thoriq was always the bookworm just like mommy but never these two and now I cannot be more pleased.

I get to speak to mak and bak at least once in two weeks, once a week if I am lucky thanks to Al and Viber and I am thankful to Allah for that. I still write them at least once a month. Love sending cards but have been having a tough time with missing cards and mails that somehow don't reach the recipients, five cards to date. God knows where they ended up.

It is Fall here, my favourite time of the year since the weather is cool and the trees are bursting with colours. They are so amazing that you can't help but say Glory be to Allah and glory be to Him indeed. The weather is getting colder though now that winter is fast approaching. Some days already require winter jackets and the snow made its first appearance last week, a sneak peek for the boys as it was just for a half day and not too heavy. The boys of course were excited. Mommy too. I can't stand the cold but I do love watching the snow falls. Most trees are losing their leaves already, and by that you can tell that winter will be knocking on the door soon.

a different kind of life

Sitting here in the kitchen after preparing dinner. Thaqif having his dinner and Ruiz contemplating on whether to shower first or eat and has picked shower. Adam is on the way home. He called while walking to his car, just left the clinic he said. I am talking to Thaqif as i typed this. I made a vietnamese dish of chicken and boiled eggs, and cooked some chinese spinach. The boys thankfully enjoy the dish. I am glad for the company. I was kind of down ever since i did my asar prayer, i was missing bak and mak, home, and all the people and things associated to that. I cry most times when i do my zuhur and asar, always feeling the weight in my chest, and crying in the middle of my solat. Surprisingly, it is different with maghrib and isya', i suppose over the need to be done and get back to what i was doing or to adam most of all who would wait patiently to have a conversation over our day, mostly his of course as mine is nothing interesting or extra ordinary. His would be filled of tales of patients, the staff at the clinic, at times even about what he has seen on his way to work. This reminds me of how Thaqif asked me today about when will i get my new phone and i said that it is ok, that i would get it later as it is not that important, it is not like i have any friends who would call and besides i have the ipad which is sufficient for the time being. After saying that i realised how pathetic i sounded, and how sad. No friend to call me. And that is a fact... How different life is now for me.

Turning the house into a home

The house is looking more like a home now. Finally managed to go get a rug for the living room and some throw cushions to add to the cosy feeling i want in a home. Adam was off yesterday and we were out getting stuff for almost the whole day. Tired plus a hole in our pockets but the things we bought are all for the long term. I have my sofa and book shelf delivered later today. They will not complete the whole "cosy" living room look and feel i would like to have but it is wonderful for a start. And i am thankful to Allah for all that i have, few or a lot depends on whether you would prefer to look at it as half full or half empty. Boys are having their mac and cheese lunch now and i need to go organise mine and adam's clothes as he just fixed up the much needed drawers in our bare closet. These things plus thinking about what to cook everyday are what keep me busy and distracted for now. Speaking of what to cook, chicken is out and defrosting and i am so cooking chicken with pepper in hoisin sauce for tonight's dinner. Until later...

on the eve of a new chapter

it is late. very very late. 3.02 in the morning to be exact. everyone else in this little cosy apartment in brooklyn  are asleep. abang, kak azizah, al, kak lin (they got into JFK at almost 3pm earlier, and i have been here for a week now) and adam. and here i am in front of the laptop screen, typing away. i juts had a mug of hot chocolate and nibbles of some leftover pasta. i am having trouble falling asleep and tomorrow is the big day. yes d day for adam and i, a new chapter in the journey of my life. our solemnisation ceremony will be tomorrow, or shall i say today, later at 1.30pm after the zuhur prayer at the islamic cultural centre of new york. and here i am, still wide awake with a bad throat, a little temperature, eyes that refused to droop and brain that refused to let itself fall into a dream. i am not sure why i cannot sleep. i do not think i am anxious about my new life, and another chance at being a wife. then again, who can tell. i have been so busy, and fallen sick too these past few days, i can never tell. i know i was kind of anxious about getting married. funny how it was all i wanted and now being so close to it, i feel anxious and a little fearful about taking the next step, knowing fully well if i take this step, there is no turning back, that i have got to make good with everything that i have got.
there is never a guarantee in life. the only guarantee there is are in the promises that Allah makes. the rest you have to make the best of. and when i take that vow tomorrow and promise to be adam's wife, i intend to make things good and give it all i have. may Allah bless adam and i with happiness for the rest of our lives, and may He guide us in the journey of our lives together.

i die a little, each time we say goodbye

Did not just say goodbye to 2012 but the eve of new year also saw me saying goodbye to my Thaqif in the middle.  Sent him up north to Baling, Kedah for his second year in boarding school.  Left Baling pretty late after registration, helping him to clean up and unpack, ensuring he had pretty much settled down with his things, and after having ourselves a very late lunch or more like tea, since it was already 3-ish by then. Hugged him tight and told him I would see him again soon.  I did not want him to see us go, so I walked him back to the entrance of his block after he had said goodbye to his father and brothers, and I watched him walked away from me. He smiled at me before turning to go, but not before I caught him choking back a tear.  Nevertheless, he was a lot better than when I left him there for his first year.  In fact both of us were. As I walked back to the car, I was pretty much holding back my own tears. None made it down my cheeks this time, but stayed watering in my eyes. I guess I just don't and won't get used to saying goodbye to Thaqif, even with all that so called training I have been getting from saying goodbye to Adam. It always pained me somehow. Ruiz had asked me earlier if I would be crying all the way home just like I did the first time. I told him that perhaps I would not if Thaqif does not cry first. Regardless, I know Ruiz was offering to hold my hand in case I cried like before, and I was comforted by that knowledge that I would have my baby's hand to hold on to if I did cry all the way back to KL.

everytime we say goodbye
i die a little
everytime we say goodbye
i wonder why a little
why the gods above me who must be in the know
think so little of me
they allow you to go...

how time flies

oh my goodness. i did not realise i have left this long. i supposed that is how busy i must have been.  i know i had wanted to write many times, finding my thoughts drifting to places, subjects and things i wanted to pen down. but i supposed there were always more urgent things that needed to be done first, relegating this to second and then to none. oh well, time passed so quickly and it is december first today. still cannot believe that it is already the last month of the year and 2013 is already knocking on the door. another year gone by... boys are growing. ruiz will be 11 in two months time, already at the edge of teenage years, i wish he would stay the same, the chubby youngest baby of mine, always there for me, the one who holds my hands when he sees me crying, the one who always seems to understand me better than the rest, the one who lets me hug him and roll around with him until he gets tired of it and shout in laughter to be released. soon, he will grow to be a young man and eventhough the love is there, and insyaAllah growing, it would never again be the same. there won't be those lying in bed together, looking at the ceiling, telling jokes and laughing, the occasional bear hugs shared by a child and his mom, the stolen kisses on his chubby cheeks and his shouts and screams because he has had enough of being kissed by mommy. anyhow, i shall not dwell in that for now. it only makes me sad.  now it is all good, and he is still my little baby, and i can still kiss him and hug him and make him yelp and yell for mommy to let him go. thaqif unbelievably will turn 13 a few days from now, and amazingly completed his first year away from me, in the boarding school in Baling, Kedah. he survived it and i survived it eventhough i must say, the thought of him going back there when the school holidays are over is not something i look forward to. i still sometimes wish i can bring him home, back to a school here, have him with me all the time, for as long as i still can. then again, why even bother going there? i cannot be selfish now, can i? and thoriq, growing so fast, already a young man, having turned 16 last month. with a mind of his own, always rebelling in a quiet way (well, not all the time) but always coming back to me, alhamdulillah. typical teenage stuff, lots of "u don't understand, mommy". makes one go crazy sometimes. then again, i was once like that too wasn't i?

how time flies...

seeking the ultimate love

"Two years later, when Muhammad was eight, the man he now called Father, his grandfather also died. Mina was always saying that God loved Muhammad more than anyone else, but I didn't understand how that could be the case, why did Allah take everyone Muhammad loved away from him? "To teach him to depend on Allah only,' Mina explained. "But why?" I asked. "Because it is the truth, behta. Not a truth most can handle but truth all the same. God is the only One we can depend on, truly."" - American Dervish.

This morning, as I was reading Gail Tsukiyama's "Dreaming Water" about a girl who suffered from Werner's Syndrome, a disease that makes a person age at twice the rate of a healthy individual - I suddenly became worried about Adam. No, not worried if he might have that. He has passed the age to not be diagnosed with Werner. Meaning you start showing signs of the disease when you are in your twenties, and my Adam is well past that. I was worried about his ever increasing late nights, studying, preparing presentation, practising on his questions, and I was struck by the thought of what if all these late nights, sleeping at 2 or 3, sometimes even 4 in the morning would one day lead him to having aneurysm, an excessive localized enlargement of an artery caused by a weakening of the artery wall. When ruptured, it can result in hemorrhage and more than often can be fatal. I have a friend whose husband who was on a business trip and were to leave for home the next morning, was asked by his colleague to have coffee at the hotel's coffeehouse. Despite already being ready for bed and had actually told his wife goodnight and reminding her to not forget to pick him up from the airport, he changed and went down anyway. When he entered the coffeehouse to join his friend, he bend down to tie his shoe lace, and slumped forward. No warning, no nothing, and there he was, gone. In this book "Dreaming Water", the girl's father died of the same condition. He came home, kissed his wife, went upstairs to change for dinner, and never came down. His wife found him half slumped on the bed, almost in a kneeling position, warmth already waning from his life, dead to the world, from the blood vessel burst in his head, with no meaningful last words left for his wife, for who could have guessed?

I know death is in the hands of God. Only He would know when our time is up. And a lot of times, even when we know that fact, we tell ourselves that we should stay healthy, keep a healthy lifestyle, take care of our mental and physical condition and eat well. When someone dies, especially when he dies young, we tell ourselves, "if only he had exercised" or "if only he had eaten well" or "if only he had gone for regular medical check-ups" and so on and so forth. What makes us think that if he had eaten moderately or if he had exercised all the time, and if he is on the dot for all his regular check-ups, he will not die anyway when comes the time? Point is, no one knows when death is near. People said there are signs, but do we see them? Perhaps, but only after that person is gone. Even then, I have heard of many who said that there were no signs or changes that they noticed before their loved ones passed on. And what about the person himself? Could he have noticed the changes in him, those signs of death coming your way 40 days before the actual day? Because I have never heard or read of anyone saying that they have the signs and they know they will die in just over a month's time. And after they are gone, unfortunately they cannot come back and tell us if they had seen those signs of death about to embrace them in the 40 days preceding but unable to say anything because that is just how is with one so close to death.

Anyhow coming back to me being worried about Adam, despite telling myself that even if he takes care of himself, and God wills for him to die at a certain time of a certain condition, he will anyway and there is nothing anyone can do to go against what Allah has willed. "But what if Adam leaves me, I will be alone,"  I thought to myself, and further tormenting myself with "And what if his time comes when we are just a few years in our marriage? How can he go when we have not even spent a lifetime with each other?" I know, by now you would think I am going bonkers. I am too and I was like "stop it" and I know if I tell this to Adam, he would be saying the same thing as well, "stop it." After all, that is how life is, we are going to die and leave people we love behind, or people we love will die and leave us alone.

Except, the fact is, we are actually not alone, if we look past things, if we look past our ego or nafs. If we learn to only love Allah or at best, love Him the most, beyond everything and everyone else in this world. It is His love that we should seek and strive for. The rest are all additional earthly matters, that even without, we can live with if we only have Allah's love. That brings me back to the passage above which I quoted from the book, American Dervish. About the Prophet (pbuh) having everyone that he loves taken away by God. Why is that Allah did that to him? If Allah loved him, why would Allah put him in such a painful and sorrowful situation? And yes as Mina said, so that the Prophet will realise that only Allah lasts, only the love for Him and His love would last, and that at the end of everything, the ultimate fact of our life is that we can depend on no one but Him. People we love and who love us will leave us, whether by death or other circumstances in life. But Allah... He never leaves us, will never leave us. That it is His love that we should strive for, that we should seek for to the end of times. And most times, we forget that. We are worried of losing the people we love, but we forget that we should be worrying about losing His love for us. We take for granted His presence. We hardly give a thought to "what if Allah leaves me, today, tomorrow, whenever?"

Then we will truly be alone. I remember my brother discussing that passage quoted above, and asking me what I understand of it. I told him exactly as I had understood at that time, that we can depend on no one else but Him. He told me there is more to it, said we will talk about it when he gets home to our parent's which was on that previous weekend I made the flourless brownies, but we didn't get the chance to talk about it further. Too many other wordly matters that took centre stage in our chat that night at our parent's. I don't want to forget that we have not spoken about it, I want to be able to hear his take on it, a broader view on what it is and learn from it, because he knows so much, his reading on all things related to the Beloved is vast. So, I shall not let him off scot-free the next time he comes back for a visit. I want to know more so that I will learn to put aside my nafs, the wants and the needs for all worldly matters and strive for Godly matters. Then again, I am only human, a sinner who stumbles all the time, who still want to love and be loved by Adam, my boys, my parents, my siblings, who feel that she can never live without this love and this people. But that does not mean I cannot try right? I may not even be fifty percent successful, I should not even dream of coming close to being like Rabia al Adawiyya, who lived only for the love of Allah, but then again, that does not mean I do not want to at least strive to love Him the most, to put Him above everything and everyone else in this world, to miss Him and to yearn for Him for as long as I live.

It is not too late to try right?  After all, everything can be if I keep on asking, and of course if and when He wills it... insyaAllah.

flourless chocolate brownies anyone?

I made this the other weekend, a last minute decision when contemplating on making dessert for my brother and his family who were coming down from Setiawan to visit my parents. It was on a Saturday evening, so it was my usual time with the boys to have dinner with their grandparents, and my other brother and his daughter were joining us as well. The more, the merrier and the more reason I wanted to bake something for dessert to be enjoyed by the whole family. Thoriq for the past number of times have been wanting to eat flourless brownies and I never made any, and while contemplating on what to bake, I actually "ran" into the recipe of flourless brownies by that gorgeous kitchen diva, Nigella Lawson. Checked the ingredients required and eventhough there were one or two items that I do not have and need to improvise by replacing them with what I do have, I thought ok this is it. So brownies again, but totally different from my usual walnut and chocolate brownies or that sinful brownies with the orange zest cream cheese topping. This one as the name says is flourless and because of that, comes out really gooey, and you simply have to make the hot chocolate sauce to drizzle over the brownies and vanilla icecream (which you do not need but I must say is a must-have to complete this whole dessert).  Anyhow I baked it, took it to the parent's and it went down well with the kids and adults. There were some leftover and eventhough I would have loved to bring a little back, I needed to ensure that Ruiz sticks as close as possible to this diet I am putting him on (cut him off sodas and any sugary drinks, and make him have water 99 percent of the time, and cutting out all the sweets which means I have to bake less or I can bake but please donate or give away three quarter of what I baked, have brown rice at home which I have already introduced and makes up half of the rice cooked nowadays, and I am considering just buying only brown rice when I finally run out of the white rice I have currently, cutting his portions to half, and having more sandwiches, omit the white bread of course). The reason he has to be put on a diet is because he weighs more than mommy does and although he is cute and round and chubby and you just want to hug him and wish you can pinch him and roll around with him all day long (which he hates), I don't want his weight to get out of control which will be a lot worse for him if I start later. I just started him on this diet like for the past week and a half and we will see how it goes.

Anyway coming back to the brownies, due to that diet for Ruiz (which helps me control my chocolate and sweets intake as well), I did not bring any leftovers home. Mak told me last night when I saw her that the leftovers were gone rather quickly the next morning, so I am glad everyone enjoyed it. Therefore, I would love to share the recipe with you brownie lovers out there. Make sure you make the hot chocolate sauce, plonk a good scoop of vanilla icecream over the brownies, drizzle the hot chocolate over but do not overdo it, and have a great time. And since I did not have the chance to take pictures of it, I am sharing Nigella's picture of the brownies (which are professionally taken by the way as compared to any of mine). So enjoy and have a chocolatey brownie Sunday everyone.

Brownie:
225g dark chocolate
225g butter
2 tsp vanilla extract
200g caster sugar
3 eggs, beaten
150g ground almonds
100g chopped walnuts

Chocolate sauce:
75g dark chocolate
125ml double cream
2 x 15ml tbsp Camp coffee or 2tsp of instant espresso powder
dissolved in 2tbsp water (I replaced this with 2tbsp or slightly less of nescafe)
1 x 15ml tbsp golden syrup

Method:
for the Brownie:
1. pre-heat oven to 170C
2. Melt the chocolate and butter gently over low heat in a heavy based saucepan
3. Take the pan off the heat, mix in vanilla and sugar, and let it cool a little
4. Beat the eggs into the pan along with the ground almonds and chopped walnuts

Turn into a 24cm square tin or use a foil one. Bake in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes. The top will have set but the mixture will still be gooey (the top for my brownie was rather crisp i must say). Once cooler, cut carefully (recommended to cut four down, four across into 16 squares, though I cut smaller and had more squares).

for the sauce:
1. break up the chocolate and put into a heavy based saucepan
2. add the remaining ingredients, place pan over a gentle heat and let everything melt together
3.once everything has melted, stir well, take off the heat and pour into a jug to serve

throwing out sadness from my coffee mug

today i wake up feeling weepy. maybe it is that time of the month (oh you know. if you don't, go figure). it was made worse when i was told by the post graduate centre that i missed the last date of defence for research proposal which was just last month when the irony was that i was presenting at my faculty on one of those particular dates instead (and to be told by one of the professors how he thought i have gone and passed through my defence). i actually already knew that i have missed the date as i browsed the post-grad website last night and saw the missed dates. but i had expected another new schedule for next month at least if not this month, and was told that i have to wait until may for the next defence session. my heart fell and i heard myself asking the lady on the other end of the phone "can't my supervisor arrange with the centre for a date for me to do my defence?" and i heard her giving me a sympathetic "no, i am afraid not." i tried further, "but i have presented at the faculty and what i have presented is basically what it is for my defence. i cannot wait till may, what will i do until then?" again she emphatised with me but told me firmly that there is nothing much she can do about it, because defence sessions are only held a few times each year. i found that such a stupid policy or procedure which would delay anyone like me from completing their research work earlier but what can i do?

i was determined to have things done, so there i was early in the morning, already making a call to my supervisor. one try, and no answer, two tries and no answer. biting my lips, and with a heavy heart, i told myself to give it a bit of time. less than ten minutes later, he called, mr supervisor i mean. i believe he heard the disappointment in my voice and told me i could prepare the paperwork for defence and in the meantime, i could start interviewing people for the qualitative part of my research. i was almost wailing (i hope not) "what am i to do till may?" he said to come in and see him next week and settle a few things, get my paper screened for plagiarism, have amendments done if it is over the percentage allowed, get all the paperwork and documents done (which i found is surprisingly quite a lot to deal with, but i am not complaining if only i have that defence done with, which unfortunately i won't) and then proceed with my data collection despite not getting a nod of pass and approval from that panel of professors  i was looking forward, albeit the nervousness, to meet.

by the time adam called at mid-morning, i was so weepy, that was all that was needed to trigger off the tears. i did not allow him to see my face on my iphone (facetime, if you do not know it yet), and when he asked me why, i told him i am pouting, which i realised now was ridiculous. he knew i was upset with him since last night when he was rushing to the hospital and told me to save money when i wanted a quick call before going to bed. so my weepiness must have started way before and maybe i should blame it on my women's special time of the month. so anyway there i was blabbering to him about how i missed him and how inconsiderate he was, and how i cannot get over the fact that i will not be seeing him this may, and how it will be until the end of the year before i make that trip to see him, and how my research work is going to be delayed by all the silly procedures, and how i need to complete my research by year end and have it done and over with as i had planned, and how i was trying to keep him happy by not complaining, and how i was trying to keep the boys happy by keeping my promise of taking them to New York and thus the need to save, save, save, and how i am tired of being strong and that i cannot find more strength but somehow always do (am i making sense here?), and how i am not as strong as him but i am stronger than most women (i do have time to demand some credit for myself, you know), and how i tell myself one day i am fine with not seeing him this may and then try my damndest luck to find ways and reasons to go see him, to which i tell myself i am being super silly because i have already decided that the end of the year is the best as i have the boys and will be a good time for us to settle down finally, and asking why is it things are so difficult, and adam just let me be weepy and listened.

when i was done, i realised how foolish i can be, that i should appreciate and be thankful for what i have instead of allowing myself to wallow in my sadness. everyone have sadness right? what good would it do to wallow in it? sadness comes and goes, at times forgotten. life still has to move on, and we need to look at all the positive things around us, count our blessings and be thankful for what God has given us.

i read somewhere that without trials and tribulations, we tend to forget Him, the Almighty. without trials and tribulations, life might be too easy and trivial and boring. we need some adventure to liven up our days, to fill up our souls, to move closer to Allah for in Him that we find everlasting love, everlasting hope, everlasting consolation and contentment.

i have certainly complained too much today. it is time i stop whining, step back, bask in the sunshine, say thanks to Allah, send my salaam to Rasulullah (pbuh), have faith in Allah for all the things that happened and the way events are being played out in my life, knowing He knows best, count all my blessings for all the good things in my life instead of complaining of what nots, and why nots, be thankful for my parents and siblings, look forward to my trip to bring thaqif home for a week semester break and my time with all my three boys, give thanks for adam, and stop short my despair. for what is there to despair? when there is so much i should be thankful for.

my happiness
is permanent
and absolute.

my sadness
is transient
a temporary
forgetfulness
self-inflicted.

i read that from Taufiq Abdul Khalid's writings (whose writings, i have been crazy of, of late if you had stopped to notice). and bingo, what he said in that poem is true.sadness is like that  left-over coffee in my mug this morning, it can be forgotten and then get thrown out. when replaced with good strong freshly brewed coffee, voila the rest of the afternoon will be all good and bright again.

until later, time to throw out what's left of that sadness in my coffee mug, time to bask in the sunshine ( i have to run and collect ruiz from school today as promised as he has a sprained ankle) and time to thank God for all i have rather than despair for what is not meant to be...

Celebrating Bak and Mak

my brother Nazrie posted this touching poem on the Facebook family wall awhile ago to mark my beloved bak's birthday which is today and my much-loved mak's birthday which was on february 20. and after being unwell for many weeks, over a month actually, bak's long overdue eye "operation" was finally done today and alhamdulillah, everything went well. the "operation" was our siblings' birthday gift to him. but this saturday when my brother Nazrie and his family are back at my parents', and together with my other brother Al and whoever else joining, we will have a small celebration and i shall bring a cake, and we shall bring as much as love as possible to the table, laying it out for them, celebrating bak and mak's lives, a gift to us siblings from Allah, a gift we will always treasure, praying for good things for them especially for blessings from Allah swt.

To My Children

when I spill some food on my nice clean dress
or maybe forget to tie my shoe
please be patient and perhaps reminisce
about the many hours I spent with you.

when I taught you how to eat with care
plus tying laces and your numbers too
dressing yourself and combing your hair
those were precious hours spent with you.

so when I forget
what I was about to say
just give me a minute - or two
it probably wasn't important anyway
and I would much rather listen to you.

if I tell you the story one more time
and you know the ending through and through
please remember your first nursery rhyme
when I rehearsed it a hundred times with you.

when my legs are tired and it's hard to stand
or walk the steady pace that I would like to do
please take me carefully by my hand
and guide me now as I often did for you.

Allah's precious gift

This is an overdue post on this blog - i posted this birthday tribute to my darling Ammar Ruiz on my FB on his birthday, January 31:

Ten years ago, I fell in love with you without even seeing u, and when u finally made an appearance and showed yourself, I fell in love all over again, harder than before, stronger than ever, and that love I feel for you has grown with the years and will grow much more in the years to come. Always wanting to be ahead of the pack, you made an early appearance at 11.50pm on January 31, 2002, three weeks before your actual due date. Happy Birthday my adorable darling Ammar Ruiz ♥ Thank you for making mummy's life whole and thank you Allah for Your "gift".

on the day we left thaqif in Baling on january 25, i moved to the back of the car on the way home and sat next to ruiz quarter-way through the journey. i cried halfway home thinking of thaqif, and all the time i was crying, ruiz held my hand and didn't let go, as if to tell me that it is ok, that he is there for me. as with many other events when he has demonstrated his warmness and sensitivity, i was and am still so amazed at how sensitive and caring my barely 10 year old son can be. i hope he stays that way all his life...

a full plate

january passed me by so quickly, i don't even know where the days went. i was so busy preparing thaqif for his boarding school and getting my progress presentation done, not to mention having my paper done for defense submission, i had no time for other stuff. bak was also not in good health, and i was trying to juggle everything, going back and forth to see him and mak as much as i could. even my cancelled plans to visit adam didn't get me down as it would in the past. not because i love him less or miss him any lesser, but there have been too many things going on on my end, i sometimes feel i cannot breathe.

thoriq is past his PMR disappointment and i am hoping is keeping his spirit going on working hard for his SPM eventhough it is a over a year away. keep telling him he needs to have his form four work in his hands so that he does not need to struggle with both his form four and five lessons next year. i have accepted the fact that it is not his "rezeki" to go to a boarding school. i am sure there are a lot of good in it, and perharps even lessons to learn from this. i just hope he works hard and have a bright future ahead of him apart from being a good son and muslim. ruiz is in the first class in standard four and the only class doing maths and science in english. don't even get me started there, all the stupid educational policies and changes the ministry is making, and how it is affecting students, teachers and parents. well i can talk about it in a different post if i am up to it that is. his good friends are mostly in the same class and since he is so playful, i find the need to remind him that it is going to be a competitive year for him. as for thaqif... sigh. he is having a hard time in MRSM. he keeps saying he misses home and mummy, and the boarding school is not his place. he is finding a hard time adjusting, and it is stressing me out. i am hoping he settles down real soon and i pray to Allah to take away the sadness from his heart so that he can concentrate on his studies and be happy there. i am beginning to wonder too if i have done the right thing sending a 12 year old boy who is quiet and reserved so far away from his familiar ground. yesterday evening, i sent him the surah al-insyirah - "verily, with every difficulty, there comes relief. verily, with every difficulty, there comes relief."  i do hope as he repeats it, it gives him the relief he needs. oh Allah, please lighten thaqif's heavy heart, take away the burden off his soul, remove the sadness from him and smoothen his journey for him, for You are the Almighty, the Most Merciful. my tears fel l like rain when i left him and i still find myself crying these days whenever he calls and speak to me with that sadness in his voice. Oh dear Allah, give both him and me strength to get through this.

Bak is better these days, Alhamdulillah. A lot better than the past few weeks. He is walking on his own again and has gone downstairs for his lunch and dinner now. His improved condition is a big help to Mak as she herself has been suffering from swollen ankles, painful knee joints, aching back ever since Bak got sick. i do have to go see them soon as my last visit was on saturday when thaqif was home for a long weekend break, well, not that long, just two full days at home - picked him up on thursday and sent him back via penang on sunday. it was tiring but it was well worth it to have him home. just not sure if it did more harm than good as he is not adjusting all that well.

plans with adam has to be postponed and postponed and shelved. at the rate we are going and how things are going for him at this point, we just don't even know when we will ever be able to settle down. too many hurdles to cross, too many challenges to overcome. my plate is so full, i sometimes feel it might spill over soon. but at times, despite feeling so, i am amazed at how much calmer i am at facing this separation from adam and all the cancelled and postponed plans. maybe there are a lot of "hikmah" in it, i just don't see them now. well actually one of them is bak getting sick and thankfully i am here instead of there. there are probably a lot more. i leave everything to Allah for now for He knows best and from this shall i gather all my strength. insyaAllah.

letting go

my thaqif in the middle who has just turned 12 last december 6 received an offer to further his secondary studies at Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) in Baling, Kedah, at least a 5-hour drive from KL. it is a Cambridge programme where he will sit for both the O level examination at the end of form four enabling him to further his studies overseas a year ahead of his peers in normal programme offered in other MRSMs (and public schools) and without sitting for the Malaysian Education Certificate or SPM at the end of form five. then again, the students are encouraged to continue with form five and sit for SPM. i have always wanted my boys to have this opportunity and this cambridge programme is a new programme offered in only four MRSMs out of just over 40 MRSMs all over Malaysia, i believe. and for thaqif to be selected after sitting for an interview and examination last december is to be thankful for. of course there is a tinge of pride that he has been selected but then again, he could not have done it without the blessings of Allah. and i was totally leaving it to Him when it comes to thaqif's future.

anyhow, thaqif is slated to register on january 25 and despite being excited over him getting the offer, i found myself crying for a few days after having pretty much decided that he should not let this opportunity pass. i initially thought that if he actually succeeded but is placed in an MRSM as far as Baling, i would not let him go. but now that he has gotten in and ironically enough to the last place i had hoped for, i could not just say no. it would be great for his future i am sure. but... i am having a hard time letting go.

as i write this, i am crying, fearing how i would feel when i leave him behind. i hope he will be ok too because if he isn't, it would be even harder for me to get through my days. i know in time, he will settle down and perhaps enjoy his boarding school life to the fullest. and i would probably get used to it but not fully enough that not one day will pass that i shall not miss him. my little boy is growing up and is leaving the nest before i am prepared to let go. maybe i will never be prepared enough no matter how old he is. but this, this is too early. and i am having such a difficult time.

this reminds me of my conversation with a pediatrician about the bond between mothers and their kids. "the doctor might have cut off the umbilical cord when we give birth, but in reality, the invisible umbilical cord between a mother and her child grows longer each day, that there could never be the right day to let go."

i shall miss u my baby, every second of my every day...

precious pearls of memories

happy birthday to my dearest "thaqif in the middle", born at 1.01pm on a drizzling afternoon on december 6, 1999 - for every recollection i have of u, i have a thousand others: a little curly haired boy splashing in the pool, crying at the sight of an A&W bear at abang's birthday, grinning your toothy grin, refusing to have me leave u on the first day of kindy, a kiss goodnite, a crayoned Mother's Day card... these moments i would string together and wear them like precious pearls every day of my life ♥ ♥ ♥

thoriq turns fifteen

happy birthday to my dearest thoriq, my first born child,
welcomed into this world fifteen years ago on a sunday morning at 9.25am on november 3, 1996.
the person who first showed me the miracle of this love a mother has for a child.
truly, there are really places in the heart i don't even know exist
until you came along and made my life whole...

happy mother's day

"A man came to the Prophet (pbuh) and asked him, "Who amongst his near one had the greatest right over him?" The Prophet replied, "Your mother". The man then asked, "Who after that?" to which the Prophet replied again, "Your mother". Asked who is next, the Prophet again replied, "Your mother". When the man asked who after that, the Prophet said, "Your father" - Abu Hurairah (ra)"

on the box for the cupcakes
it was mother's day yesterday and on the night before which was saturday, i took mak and bak with the boys and al for a mother's day dinner. initially wanted to take mak for some good thai food but bak refused to go far.  he only wanted to go to nearby restaurants leaving us with very little options. eventually much to the chagrin of al who was rather tired of food at this particular bariani restaurant, that was where we ended up anyway, decided by bak.  i jokingly asked how was it that he gets to decide on where to eat when it was mother's day and that mak should be the one picking out a place. he just laughed and of course he got his way. that aside, we enjoyed our time together regardless and i was happy to be able to take them out and do a little something with boys and al in tow. after dinner, i made a call to adam and he got to speak with bak and actually wished mak happy mother's day in malay that made mak laugh.

i made cupcakes for a change. nothing fancy. i wanted to get those mother's day stickers for cupcakes but the baking shop was out of them. so i made do with whatever deco stuff i had which weren't much.  and i let the flowers for mak wait a bit until the actual day, so she was not expecting anything after dinner and the cupcakes. when the flowers (my favourite this time, of white lillies and tuberose) were delivered, she was surprised and i suspect delighted (any flowers would make her happy) and called me right away to inform me.
lil cupcakes all in a row?
yesterday being the actual mother's day, i went there again in the afternoon to have tea with them. abang and family came as well and it was all good, to be talking about their impending trip to manchester and visit to old trafford (where i was with the ex hubby and thoriq when he was barely a year old).  took the opportunity to ask abang and kak ezza to get the boys manchester united's jersey. thaqif especially has been dying for it (and btw manchester united won 2-1 against chelsea last night and abang said if MU wins, everyone would get an MU t-shirt. we will see about that, haha).
cuppies for mom's day

we left just before maghrib and bak was thanking me profusely for the night before and the flowers and i told him to stop thanking me because if he were to do that, i would have a much longer list, too many things to list out, things that i have to thank them for since i was carried in mak's womb, things that i can never thank them enough, things that i am indebted to them all my life and can never repay in any amount of money. to be able to make them happy and give them whatever little i can while they are still alive is what i strive to do insyaAllah.

happy mother's day my beloved mak...
